Legal notice on active safety assistance systems: Emergency braking systems and other safety assistance systems can support the driver and mitigate the severity of accidents or prevent accidents in critical driving situations under optimal conditions, within the system limits. However, irrespective of this, the driver has a duty to adapt his driving behaviour and in particular his speed to the traffic and weather conditions and to be attentive at all times. This applies in particular to special situations such as icy or wet roads, rain, crosswind, poor visibility, snowfall, fog, etc. Consequently, the driver, as the driver of the vehicle, has the responsibility for the entire driving situation at all times and must not rely exclusively on the safety assistance systems.

Assistance systems can only support drivers. The driver is always fully responsible for driving the vehicle safely.

Economy

Every bus costs money. The Tourismo saves it.

For decades coaches from Mercedes-Benz have been outstanding for their reliability and economic efficiency. The Tourismo takes a big step toward the future and sustainability. It relies equally on state-of-the-art and mature series production technology with high quality standards. Thanks to advanced and particularly economical drives, together with excellent aerodynamics, the fuel consumption of the models is gratifyingly low. At the same time, there has been a rise in efficiency — for optimal total cost of ownership. This means maximum cost effectiveness for maximum ride comfort.

Economic efficiency can be controlled.

There are several things you can do to drive a coach more efficiently. Approximately a third of the costs incurred can be actively influenced. Special equipment optional extras like the Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) anticipatory cruise control system for automated and manual transmissions, or Eco Driver Feedback (EDF) with individual tips on driving style, help your driver to further reduce the energy consumption.

Reduce consumption – save costs.

And that is where the Tourismo makes sure that every kilometre pays — because it is very economical. That is not only good news for your balance sheet, but also the environment: thanks to the perfect interplay between vehicle technology, intelligent driving style analysis, and tailored OMNIplus driver training.

Thinking one step further from the very beginning.

The Tourismo offers your company overall economic advantages in terms of investment, consumption, maintenance and residual value. Everything in the Tourismo is designed to minimise expensive downtime. And long maintenance intervals with oil changes after as many as 120,000 kilometres* ensure long use on the road.

An investment that pays off in the long term.

A Tourismo is especially profitable even when it leaves your fleet. After all, the residual value of a bus is just as important as the original investment. Thus, even at the end of the vehicle's life there are options to give you more security in planning your capital investment from the onset.

Repaired faster, back on the road faster.

The engine and all the major units** are very accessible for easy maintenance. OMNIplus provides a complete range of customised services and a perfect supply of spare parts to get your vehicle back on the road quickly. Repairs and maintenance cost time as well as money. Your fleet is permanently on the move, and to keep it that way it is essential to have regular and competent maintenance. The Tourismo can be equipped with the current Bus Data Center telematics systems. Today the transmission of the current location and the vehicle diagnostic data is already fairly easy. A touch of a button and the vehicle data is already automatically on its way to the OMNIplus 24h SERVICE hotline. Thanks to the precise location information service assistance arrives that more quickly at the vehicle. Well prepared and competent, the technician soon has the coach repaired on site. A visit to the workshop can in most cases be avoided. That saves a lot of time. The sooner repaired, the sooner back on the road.

* Applies only to touring coach applications with the OM 470 engine. The OM 936 engine has a shorter maintenance interval of 90,000 km.
** The air-conditioning system and the refrigerator of your vehicle are filled with R-134a refrigerant and contain fluorinated greenhouse gas. The warning signs with detailed information about the refrigerant used are located on each device. To this end, please observe the vehicle's Operating Instructions. You can find further details in the appropriate technical information brochure.

Technology

The best drive: Innovation.

Powerful performance.

State-of-the-art six-cylinder in-line engines of the latest engine generation operate at the rear. With their displacements of 7.7 and 10.7 litres, respectively, they are compact yet powerful at the same time. Their outputs range from 260 kW (354 hp) to 335 kW (456 hp), depending on the model.

Long maintenance intervals.

With the OM 470 engine, the first change of the soot particle filter in touring coaches is due only after 360,000 kilometres, followed by change intervals of 240,000 kilometres each. In the OM 936 engine, the oil has to be changed every 90,000 kilometres for inter-city and touring coach operations, and in the OM 470 engine every 120,000 kilometres.

More savings potential.

Thanks to optimised aerodynamics with a Cd value of 0.33, consumer management, an on-demand increase in the engine idling speed and optimised battery charging, fuel consumption has been further reduced. Further savings potential comes courtesy of the optional Predictive Powertrain Control and Eco Driver Feedback electronic assistance systems.

Optimum power transfer.

The Tourismo OM 470 powered by the 265 kW engine is equipped with the Mercedes-Benz six-speed manual transmission, manufactured in-house. However, many coach operators prefer the fully-automated eight-speed Mercedes-Benz GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission with steering column lever control.

This transmission, specially developed for buses and coaches, impresses with its perfect gear ratio adjustment and equally smooth and fast gearshifts. It relieves both driver and drivetrain together with its clutch. In practice, high elasticity and powerful pulling away at low engine rev speeds are particularly important, as they offer the driver optimum power transmission from the engines.

A safe investment.

And the business also benefits: from low energy consumption, high reliability and long maintenance intervals. These features make the Tourismo a highly economical vehicle that pays for itself quickly.

Economic efficiency for our customers was the guiding principle during the development of the Tourismo. The broad range of equipment enables a more targeted selection according to the requirements and thus offers the best prerequisites for a cost-effective use.

Based on the proven drive concept of the six-cylinder in-line engine, the OM 936 with its 7.7 litres of displacement serves as the entry-level engine. Furthermore, the OM 470 with 10.7 litre displacement is also used. In the spotlight: the engines with 290 and 315 kW (428 hp).

The centrepiece of the drivetrain range is the OM 470 six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 10.7 litres and four output levels between 265 kW (360 hp) and 335 kW (456 hp). It combines high-level driving dynamics with low energy consumption. Thanks to SCR technology, this engine with BlueTEC 6 diesel technology operates in an environmentally friendly and economical manner. The OM 470 powered by the 265 kW engine is equipped as standard with the Mercedes-Benz six-speed manual transmission, manufactured in-house. The comfortable, smoothly shifting, automated eight-speed Mercedes-Benz GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission is available as an option.

Safety

The Mercedes-Benz Buses integral safety concept.

Benchmark in the business segment.

The Tourismo sets all-new standards with its sophisticated standard safety technology. Numerous electronic helpers have been integrated to assist the driver and prevent accidents. These include ABA 6 Plus, Sideguard Assist 2, SPA and AtAs 2 for fatigue detection. Another unique feature in the Tourismo segment is the Front Collision Guard (FCG) to protect the driver and attendant in the case of a frontal collision.

The extensive safety technology with ABS, Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), Lane Assist (SPA) and Rain Light Sensor ensures a very positive driving experience. Add to this the Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), the emergency braking system ABA 6 Plus and the Continuous Brake Limiter (DBL). Additional assistance in emergency braking situations is provided by the Electro-pneumatic braking system (EBS) and Brake Assist (BAS). Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM) likewise provides enhanced driving safety. In order for your drivers to be able to focus all their attention on the road, all the instruments are clearly arranged in the user-friendly cockpit, including ergonomic joystick control.

All-round safety.

The strength of the bodywork is also an important factor in the Tourismo's high level of safety. With its resistance and structural strength according to UN ECE-R 66.02, the consequences of an accident can be mitigated.

Safe. Safer. Mercedes-Benz.

Most accidents begin long before the impact. For example, with poor visibility or unforeseeable hazards. This is why the Tourismo is equipped with a number of safety features that help master critical driving situations.

Starting with the ergonomic driver's workplace. The driver can comfortably reach all controls and has a perfect view of all the instruments. The wide-angle exterior mirrors guarantee more safety through better all-round vision.

While on the move electronic assistants support the driver. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) minimises the risk of the wheels locking when braking. The electronic-pneumatic brake control (EBS) significantly shortens the stopping distance, as the brakes are actuated faster and more precisely. The Acceleration Skid Control (ASR) system provides additional safety. It helps the driver to minimise the risk of the rear of the vehicle (rear-wheel drive) breaking out laterally when accelerating. ABS, EBS and ASR form the basis for further developed electronic safety systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) or the Brake Assist System (BAS), with which the Tourismo is also equipped.

MirrorCam

Depending on the vehicle, the images are displayed on 7" and 15" monitors. The two high-resolution displays show the different fields of vision. The photodiodes integrated in the monitors detect the incident light and adjust the brightness of the respective monitor individually. To make it easier for the driver to evaluate the images, the 15" variants have three different guide lines. Together with the permanently calibrated vehicle end line, the distance line assists the driver in assessing approaching objects. The Overtaking Assist overlay is activated from a speed of 10 km/h with flashing, in order to safely assist overtaking or turning. In addition, the display for Blind Spot Assist is installed in the monitor.

The modern MirrorCam system provides a clear and full view of the road traffic. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the driving safety is improved and the risk of accidents is minimised. The extended field of vision enables the driver to see pedestrians, cyclists and other road users in the surrounding area. This eliminates the blind spot when turning right.

Traffic Sign Assist (TSA)

The innovative Traffic Sign Assist offers maximum safety and comfort on the road. Thanks to GPS and camera support, the vehicle speed is constantly compared with the current traffic regulations.

The system is designed to provide dedicated and appropriate feedback if the permitted speed is exceeded. Thanks to the state-of-the-art instrument cluster, the driver receives both visual and audible signals that immediately draw attention to the speed.

Sideguard Assist 2

Sideguard Assist 2 is a safety assistance system that supports the driver in critical situations when turning right or turning left when visibility is possibly restricted. The system is designed to help detect moving obstacles within the system limits, and warns the driver so as to avoid critical situations or reduce the consequences of accidents when turning off or changing lanes.

The side areas of the vehicle are constantly monitored. As a result, vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists who may be in the blind spot are detected on both the front passenger side and the driver’s side. The radar system precisely detects the movements and warns the driver of possible collisions. The intuitive user interface and clear warnings allow the driver to drive safely and relaxed.

Active Brake Assist 6

The emergency braking system ABA 6 Plus assists the driver by automatically initiating emergency braking if there is a risk of rear-impact collision with vehicles in front or stationary obstacles. It also detects moving or stationary persons and cyclists in front of the vehicle. The system reacts to this with an acoustic and visual warning to the driver as well as an automatically initiated partial braking or emergency braking.

With Active Brake Assist 6, accidents can be avoided even more reliably. The system covers the entire vehicle speed range and is active in the background. Up to a speed of 60 km/h, pedestrians and cyclists can react. The ABA 6 safety system reacts to crossing and oncoming pedestrians and moving cyclists in the vehicle’s own lane with automatic emergency braking. This automation also provides increased safety for cyclists, whether in intercity or urban traffic.

Front Collision Guard (FCG)

Front Collision Guard offers increased safety in the event of a head-on collision thanks to a crossmember behind which crash elements are located. Their absorber structure converts the impact energy into deformation energy. The crossmember serves as a reliable underride guard. As the driver's seat is mounted on a solid frame part, this can move completely to the rear in the event of a serious head-on collision and thus better preserve the driver's safe space.

The patented technology includes a multi-part cross section as underride guard behind the bumper with the idea of protecting other road users, e.g. preventing a car from going under the bus. The front-end structure behind this cross section consists of crash elements that can selectively dissipate energy in the event of a collision. In addition, the driver's area, including steering, pedals and seat, is located on a massive frame section that is displaced rearward as a complete unit in the event of a serious head-on collision, thereby increasing the survival space by vital centimetres.

The FCG fulfils the requirements of the underride guard according to ECE-R 93, as well as legal norms for pendulum impact in buses. Moreover, the FCG already meets future statutory standards for pendulum impact tests on buses.

Lane Assist (SPA)

With the aid of a camera system behind the windshield, the Lane Departure Warning system detects when the vehicle unintentionally leaves a marked lane. As soon as the vehicle crosses the markings, the driver is warned by a clear vibration on the corresponding side of the driver's seat.

The LDWS is activated from a speed of 40 mph (60 km/h). The lane assist system is switched off when the turn signal is activated, for example when the driver initiates a deliberate lane change. The system can be deactivated in the ICUC menu, e.g. in a construction site.

A small camera behind the windshield uses boundary lines to record the road directly in front of the vehicle. If the vehicle is about to cross any of the markings without a turn signal being activated, the driver is alerted by a pulsation in the seat. The camera determines the instant of warning based on the width of the lane, the distance to the marking line, and the speed of approach to the marking. The LDWS becomes active above a speed of 40 mph (60 km/h); it is switched off by operating the turn signal, for example when initiating a deliberate change of lane.

Sideguard Assist 2 & Frontguard Assist

Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) significantly reduces the risk of the vehicle skidding and tipping over by selectively braking individual wheels or by braking the vehicle as a whole.

High-performance electronics monitor the signals from the ESP® sensors and constantly determine whether the steering commands of the driver match the actual movements of the vehicle. If the values deviate from one another, the system decreases the engine torque to restore stability to the vehicle. If this is not sufficient, it also brakes individual wheels or the entire vehicle. The driver’s request for deceleration is observed at all times.

The ESP contains the ASR safety system, which prevents excessive wheel slip during acceleration. The ESP brake interventions are also secondary to the ABS function, thereby avoiding locked wheels. The ESP can be switched off and on again using a button on the instrument panel; the switch-off is indicated by a check lamp. (USA: only the ASR function contained in the ESP can be deactivated). ESP (USA: ASR) is automatically switched back on after the ignition is switched off/on.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM)

The wireless tyre pressure monitoring with indication in the multifunctional display is an electronic safety system that permanently monitors the air pressure of all tyres. Tyre pressure losses are displayed within the system limits.

The right tyre pressure contributes to driving safety and significantly reduced fuel consumption. Even a tyre pressure set 0.5 bar too low can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%. The wheel electronics are positioned on the valve on the inside of the rim. The sensors record the data relevant to the tyre pressure and transmit it to the display instrument.

All-round safety.

Before an accident, valuable seconds slip by in which the danger could possibly still be averted. In the Tourismo, the ESP® and BAS sensors detect critical driving situations such as strong oversteer or understeer, critical steering movements, panic and emergency braking at an early stage.

Increased driving safety is also offered by the directional stability of the chassis and the calm steering. This is achieved by the independent suspension on the front axle.

In an accident.

Even though the bus is one of the safest vehicles in the world and the risk of accidents when travelling by bus is very low, accidents can still occur.

Mercedes-Benz has ensured that the consequences of the accident are as limited as possible. Thus, the strength of the bodywork is also an important factor for the high level of passive safety in the Tourismo.

In addition, the Tourismo has partitions, handrails and special seating that absorb energy in the event of a collision or rollover. This means important protection for the occupants of the vehicle.

Stable bodywork (body in compliance with ECE-R 66.02)

The strength of the bus/touring coach body is also an important factor for the level of passive safety of a bus/touring coach. Its resilience can mitigate the consequences of an accident. The high strength of our vehicles' bus/touring coach bodies is guaranteed in part by all-round, weight-optimised annular frames.

The rigidity is defined in accordance with regulation UN ECE-R 66.02. It specifies the exact "survival space" which must be guaranteed by the structural design in the event of an accident.

After an accident.

The Rescue Guidelines.

Building safe vehicles is the top priority within the integral safety concept of Mercedes-Benz. This also includes all measures that help to mitigate the consequences of an accident. An important part of our work is therefore also targeted information for rescue workers. Because detailed knowledge of our vehicles and their safety systems helps the emergency services to reach injured persons more quickly. And thereby to save lives.

Design

Innovative paths in interior design.

An innovative approach has been taken with the attractive colours and forms in the interior design. This looks impressive with coordinated warm grey tones as standard. The colours harmonise perfectly with the different fabrics and trim options, which are available on request in the versions Piano black, Mocha oak, or Metal mesh.

While piano black makes the decorative elements shine in a pleasant piano lacquer look, mocha oak lends naturalness and warmth to the interior with its multi-faceted grain. Metal mesh lends the decorative surfaces a modern and sporty appearance. The basic version of the Tourismo is already convincing with its high-quality equipment and appointments, and can be upgraded and expanded with various optionally available interior colours, floor coverings, seat backs, side wall panels, luggage racks and service sets as required.

Comfort for the driver

Motoring enjoyment in two versions.

The size of the Tourismo is also obvious behind the wheel. It offers two user-friendly cockpits with joystick gearshifts, high-quality finishing and outstanding comfort. Both the Basic Plus Cockpit functional version and the more comfort-oriented Comfort Plus Cockpit version are available. Both versions are characterised by a Basic Key electronic key system. Optionally, the system can be extended to the Standard Key system with remote-controlled central locking.

Cockpit Comfort Plus offers the driver even more convenience than the standard configuration. The refrigerator* holds 67 litres, and two more stowage spaces in the centre console keep the cockpit tidy. Beside the exceptionally comfortable driver’s seat** there is a driver’s companion seat, which offers plenty of space near the entry.

The Cockpit Comfort Plus offers the driver even more amenities than with the standard equipment. The refrigerator* now holds 67 litres and two further stowage compartments in the centre console help keep the cockpit tidy. In addition to the highly comfortable bus driver's seat**, there is a new attendant's seat that offers more space and comfort

Full comfort, full control.

The basic design, including the multifunction steering wheel and state-of-the-art instrument system, is identical in both models. All instruments are clearly arranged and easy to reach without altering the seating position.

The multifunction steering wheel and the high-resolution color display with intuitive stack-and-cards menu simplify work in the cockpit behind the wheel.

The dazzle-free display provides all essential information at a glance and, if desired, can support drivers with additional information such as tour data or fuel consumption. This allows drivers to direct their full attention to the road – a major contribution to increased driving safety. The driver will also find stowage facilities including spacious stowage compartments.

Comfort for the passengers

Feel at home as soon as you climb aboard: design and comfort that make you feel good.

Perfectly harmonised.

Numerous racks and stowage options make for a tidy, spacious interior. The multipanel roof dome blends seamlessly into the luggage shelves at the sides. The spacious feeling is particularly pleasant thanks to the powerful air conditioning system* with fully automated two-zone control. Two separate circuits for heating and climate control ensure a uniform temperature inside the vehicle. Special service sets and optional charging facilities with USB and 230-volt sockets at every seat ensure a pleasant journey and enough power for electronic devices. Also, the onboard galley makes long journeys comfortable.

Here the focus is on comfort.

Depending on the application, the passenger compartment can be equipped with a focus on comfort or functionally. Features include the popular TravelStarEco (TSE) seating, which is available with swivel armrests, lateral adjustment of the side seats, adjustable backrests and footrests. There are also two additional upholstry variants. In the stylish Softline version the configuration options are almost limitless. The Luxline upholstery meets the requirements for maximum comfort.

Connect and drive off: perfectly networked.

Whether in classic touring coach applications or for long-distance bus routes: the expectations of passengers are increasing, especially with regard to connectivity and passenger information systems. The Tourismo is a hotspot on wheels: It can be equipped with a Wi-Fi router for a fast Internet connection that allows your passengers to surf the web comfortably while on the move.

For best entertainment, the Coach MediaRouter can also provide a selection of music or films for the passengers. The router also contributes to the safety of the coach: the anti-theft function uses GPS data and sends you an e-mail or SMS with the current position each time the vehicle is switched on and off.

* The air conditioning system and the refrigerator of your vehicle are filled with the refrigerant R-134a, and contain a fluorinated greenhouse gas. Notices with detailed information on the type of refrigerant used can be found on the respective unit. In connection please note the instructions in the owner’s manual for your vehicle.
