An economic miracle – large scale.
CapaCity & CapaCity L

An economic miracle – large scale.

More space about town.

Urban centres are increasingly becoming megacities. A mobility solution is thus required which is a match for this massive task. An urban bus with immense capacity and surprisingly good manoeuvrability. A city bus like the new CapaCity and CapaCity L from Mercedes-Benz – at home in the urban jungle.

Economy

Every bus costs money. The CapaCity saves it.

There are many factors in operating a bus that cost money. Even if you don't have control over all costs, there's still a lot you can do to make your CapaCity more economical to operate: more than one third of the costs incurred can be actively influenced. We show you the advantages of our buses and services with regard to total cost of ownership in terms of investment, consumption, maintenance and residual value.

Technology

Top performance on the road and in the workshop.

An economic miracle – large scale.

The CapaCity shows class not only in its size, but in economy as well. Its efficiency comes fully into play in the total cost per individual passenger.

Manoeuvrability

Snaking its way through the urban jungle.

One articulation joint, surprising economy.

Despite its considerable length, the CapaCity and the CapaCity L manage with just one articulation joint, in contrast to the competition. As a consequence, manoeuvring is especially easy. Maintenance labour is also less and the reliability exemplary. Both contribute to the overall profitability of the full-size buses.

Driving performance also means: ride comfort.

With a turning circle of 22.93 meters, the CapaCity is nearly as nimble as an articulated bus. But the longer CapaCity L also has an impressive turning circle of just 24.47 meters. This surprising agility is made possible by the electrohydraulically steered fourth axle. Thanks to its independent wheel suspension, it affords incomparable comfort and driving safety.

The clever steering of the fourth axle.

The great advantages of the CapaCity compared with other concepts for large capacity buses include its unhindered manoeuvrability when backing up.

As in forward travel at low speeds, the fourth axle is also actively steered in this case. The clever steering of the fourth axle also reduces pivoting of the rear when pulling away from the bus stop: in this case, the steering of the fourth axle reacts to the steering movement of the front axle with a defined delay. This can prevent wheel contact with the kerb and pivoting of the rear section onto the pavement.

Safety

The integral safety concept from Mercedes-Benz.

Buses and coaches are among the safest means of transportation in the world. Innovations from Mercedes-Benz have a played crucial role in ensuring this. Mercedes-Benz takes more responsibility for bus and coach safety than any other manufacturer. Many innovations now included as standard celebrated their debut in a bus or coach bearing the three-pointed star. For example, the anti-lock braking system (ABS), the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) or the Preventive Brake Assist 2 emergency braking assistant.

Responsibility and commitment. That is why Mercedes-Benz pursues the vision of accident-free driving. The Mercedes-Benz integral safety concept is an important contribution towards achieving this aim. As a consistent implementation of the safety concept, this concept covers all phases of automotive safety: from safety while driving to safety in hazardous situations and protection in the event of an accident to the mitigation of the consequences of accidents.

Legal notice on active safety assistance systems: Emergency braking systems and other safety assistance systems can support the driver and mitigate the severity of accidents or prevent accidents in critical driving situations under optimal conditions, within the system limits. However, irrespective of this, the driver has a duty to adapt his driving behaviour and in particular his speed to the traffic and weather conditions and to be attentive at all times. This applies in particular to special situations such as icy or wet roads, rain, crosswind, poor visibility, snowfall, fog, etc. Consequently, the driver, as the driver of the vehicle, has the responsibility for the entire driving situation at all times and must not rely exclusively on the safety assistance systems.

Assistance systems can only support drivers. The driver is always fully responsible for driving the vehicle safely.

Economy

Every bus costs money. The CapaCity saves it.

Economy is a question of technology. Each CapaCity provides you with an overall economical solution in your timetable. The innovative vehicle technology impresses through performance optimisation: BlueEFFICIENCY drive technology for highly efficient traction, fully automatic transmissions for first-class ride comfort and the further-developed portal axle for speeding up passenger throughflow.

Save fuel – save costs.

The Euro VI engines reduce not only pollutants to a minimum, but fuel consumption as well, and consequently lower a considerable part of fixed operating costs. Responsible for this achievement is the recuperation module, among other measures. It supplies the vehicle's electrical system with stored electricity generated free of charge in overrun mode. This relieves the engine and noticeably lowers fuel consumption.

Perfect for BRT

The best in the metropolitan area.

Urban centres are increasingly becoming megacities. The CapaCity and the CapaCity L are optimally suited for specialised Bus Rapid Transit systems offering fast and comfortable urban mobility.

The smart solution for busy routes.

Steering, drive and dimensions likewise follow the smart overall concept, based on a thousandfold-tested and trusted series production technology. The design moreover allows a lot of freedom for various options and requirements. The CapaCity L consequently combines in an ideal way its incomparable capacity and remarkable flexibility in terms of application and route planning. Whether a new shopping centre, residential area or industrial zone: the CapaCity L makes them all accessible fast and economically. This large full-size bus thus makes an essential contribution to reducing traffic congestion in the inner cities.

Large areas for standing passengers boost the capacity of the CapaCity L.

The layout of the CapaCity L is variable. The extensive areas for standing passengers allow the vehicle to be logically arranged for the largest possible occupancy. The front section provides for a special useful area on the left side and opposite, between the doors. These areas are used as needed by standing passengers, wheel chair users or by passengers with baby carriages.

Door two can be fitted with an electrically operated ramp. A mechanical folding ramp can be fitted at doors one and two. A three-split grab rail, a so-called trident (CSR*), provides support to standing passengers on the especially large special-use area on the left in the direction of travel. Shortening the bases yields further standing room directly in front of the articulation joint.

Perfect for BRT lines.

A big change is occurring day after day on roads in Germany, Europe and the world. Increasing numbers of passengers are shaping public transportation in many places today. The demand for large-scale buses is accordingly growing in urban centres. The CapaCity and the CapaCity L are the ideal candidates for this role. They confidently manage heavily frequented lines in urban transport. And they're also perfect for specialised BRT systems on dedicated lanes. They feature an impressive passenger handling capacity and outstanding manoeuvrability and allow a quick passenger throughflow.

Technology

Top performance on the road and in the workshop.

Benchmark for economy and environmental protection.

The basis for the ease of maintenance and repairs of the CapaCity lies in its origin. It comes from the proven Citaro modular system and profits many times over from this new close kinship. The advanced developmental maturity minimises repair and maintenance labour to the essentials. And in all operations each movement gets it right – from the very first day. Not only can maintenance components be found in the same places as in the Citaro G, they're also easy to access. This simplifies the work in the workshop, increases the availability of replacement parts and thereby reduces idle times and costs.

Driven by economy and a powerful engine.

The Mercedes-Benz OM 470 BlueEFFICIENCY Power engine conforms to Euro VI emission standards and is ideally suited to routes with heavy passenger volumes and specialised bus rapid transit systems. Two performance classes — 265 kW (360 bhp) with 1,700 Nm torque and 290 kW (394 bhp) with 1,900 Nm torque — are available for this purpose. A wealth of innovation is to be found in the latest generation of this heavy-duty in-line six-cylinder engine. High maximum injection pressure, a patented exhaust gas recirculation solution and a modern turbocharger — all lowering fuel consumption by up to 2 per cent, reducing emissions and enhancing engine performance and robustness.

Efficiency can be controlled.

To further increase the CapaCity’s efficiency, the electro-hydraulic steering feature — intelligent eco steering — is available as an option. It works as needed while contributing to reduced fuel consumption in urban scheduled services.

Mercedes-Benz OM 470, BlueEFFICIENCY Power engine, Euro VI exhaust gas category, vertical six-cylinder in-line engine with 10.7 litres displacement. Output: 290 kW (394 hp) at 1,600 rpm. The maximum torque is 1,900 Nm. The engine features common-rail injection. The injection pressure is generated by the X-PULSE injection system with pressure booster in the injector.

Example: Citaro G and CapaCity L.
The recuperation module regulates the power management and thereby reduces fuel consumption.

When the vehicle brakes, the alternators delivery free electricity (from the deceleration energy), which is briefly buffered in the capacitors. When the bus starts off again, the capacitors supply the on-board electrical system. The alternators continue running during idling in order not to stress the engine (torque).

Safety

The integral safety concept.

From Sideguard Assist to passenger compartment monitoring.

Especially in urban traffic, hazards are sometimes unforeseeable. All the more important, then, that measures be taken to prevent accidents. Mercedes-Benz has equipped the CapaCity bus with a number of safety features that help master critical driving situations.

Therefore, each CapaCity and CapaCity L is equipped as standard with turning assistant Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM). The optional braking assistant Preventive Brake Assist 2 warns of stationary and moving obstacles – including pedestrians and cyclists – and initiates partial braking if necessary to avoid an accident. The Citaro can also be equipped with MirrorCam, which provides better visibility to the rear and side than conventional mirrors.

MirrorCam

Depending on the vehicle, the images are displayed on 7" and 15" monitors. The two high-resolution displays show the different fields of vision. The photodiodes integrated in the monitors detect the incident light and adjust the brightness of the respective monitor individually. To make it easier for the driver to evaluate the images, the 15" variants have three different guide lines. Together with the permanently calibrated vehicle end line, the distance line assists the driver in assessing approaching objects. The Overtaking Assist overlay is activated from a speed of 10 km/h with flashing, in order to safely assist overtaking or turning. In addition, the display for Blind Spot Assist is installed in the monitor.

The modern MirrorCam system provides a clear and full view of the road traffic. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the driving safety is improved and the risk of accidents is minimised. The extended field of vision enables the driver to see pedestrians, cyclists and other road users in the surrounding area. This eliminates the blind spot when turning right.

Traffic Sign Assist (TSA)

The innovative Traffic Sign Assist offers maximum safety and comfort on the road. Thanks to GPS and camera support, the vehicle speed is constantly compared with the current traffic regulations.

The system is designed to provide dedicated and appropriate feedback if the permitted speed is exceeded. Thanks to the state-of-the-art instrument cluster, the driver receives both visual and audible signals that immediately draw attention to the speed.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) supports driving stability during critical braking operations and ensures that the vehicle remains steerable. The braking forces acting on the individual wheels are distributed by the ABS so that even in an emergency braking situation no wheel is blocked for any length of time, and the steerability of the bus is largely maintained.

The control unit of the brake electronics records the current wheel speed via the pole wheels and wheel sensors. When braking, the system controls the brake pressure at the individual wheel brake cylinders via the control valves. During emergency braking and braking with locking wheels, the system opens and closes the control valves of the wheel brake cylinders fully automatically at very short intervals, thus preventing locking and keeping the vehicle steerable.

During emergency braking and braking with locking wheels, the system opens and closes the control valves of the wheel brake cylinders fully automatically at very short intervals, thus preventing locking and keeping the vehicle steerable.

The cornering light function

The cornering light function provides even more safety through better visibility conditions at night-time when cornering at intersections and roundabouts and when manoeuvring in forward driving and reversing.

The cornering light function is activated automatically at speeds of up to approx. 35 km/h if the main headlamps are on, the turn indicator is actuated or the steering wheel is turned. One of the two front fog lamps then cuts in to illuminate an area on the side in front of the vehicle that is not being illuminated by the main headlamps.

The intelligent electronic system switches the cornering lights on or off progressively in the same way as a dimmer switch. This gives the driver's eyes a chance to adapt to the change in light.

Preventive Brake Assist 2

With Preventive Brake Assist 2, Daimler Buses offers the second generation of Active Brake Assist. The system warns of collisions with moving pedestrians and cyclists as well as stationary and moving objects. In the event of a serious risk of collision, the driver is alerted by a visual and acoustic warning and partial braking is initiated automatically.

Warning cascade and braking intervention are specifically designed for use in urban traffic. In the event of an impending collision with pedestrians or cyclists as well as with moving or stationary objects, Preventive Brake Assist 2 issues a warning. The driver is warned both visually by a flashing red triangle in the central display and acoustically, and simultaneously initiates partial braking. This braking intervention is maintained either until the driver intervenes, the situation is no longer critical, or the bus comes to a stop.

Thanks to the interaction of front radar, short-range radar and the front camera, the area up to 250 metres in front of the bus is constantly scanned. This assistance is ensured up to a speed of 60 km/h. In snow, rain, fog, heavy spray, glare/dazzling conditions, direct sunlight or constantly changing light conditions, the system range and detection of vehicles and people may be impaired.

Sideguard Assist 2 & Frontguard Assist

Sideguard Assist 2

Sideguard Assist 2 is a safety assistance system that supports the driver in critical situations when turning right or turning left when visibility is possibly restricted. The system is designed to help detect moving obstacles within the system limits, and warns the driver so as to avoid critical situations or reduce the consequences of accidents when turning off or changing lanes.

The side areas of the vehicle are constantly monitored. As a result, vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists who may be in the blind spot are detected on both the front passenger side and the driver’s side. The radar system precisely detects the movements and warns the driver of possible collisions. The intuitive user interface and clear warnings allow the driver to drive safely and relaxed.

Anti-jackknifing system, Articulation Turntable Controller (ATC).

Should the vehicle enter into an unstable driving condition – say, on a slippery road – the dampening of the articulation joint is corrected fast and as needed. This way the articulated bus is very rapidly stabilised – within the bounds of physical possibilities – in order to prevent the rear vehicle body from oscillating or even swerving out of control, thus avoiding the dreaded jackknifing effect. The new Articulated Turntable Controller (ATC) is the only regulation system of its kind to act in a manner akin to the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®).

The unique ATC anti-jacknifing system in the CapaCity and in the CapaCity L.

The CapaCity is the best example of how vehicle size need not conflict with manoeuvrability. Both models, the CapaCity and the even longer CapaCity L, are easy to manoeuvre. Of course, Mercedes-Benz includes safety as a standard feature.

Citaro G, jackknifing protection system winter testing in 2014 in Rovaniemi
Jackknifing protection system in the Mercedes-Benz Citaro G / CapaCity L articulated buses
ATC: innovative safety technology.

The dynamic articulation angle control system, the Articulation Turntable Controller (ATC), affords optimal steering ability, high stability and agility. With the aid of the ATC, the articulated bus is then very quickly stabilised within the limits of physical possibility and pivoting or even breaking out of the rear section avoided. In this way, the ATC articulation angle control system comes to approximate the effect of electronic stability control (ESP®). The result is an even higher safety level for articulated buses. The steering ability of the CapaCity thus comes close to that of a solo vehicle.

Functioning and advantages of the ATC.

The dynamic ATC regulates the hydraulic dampening of the articulation joint quickly and above all when and where it is needed, depending on the steering angle, the angle of the articulation joint, the speed and the load, among other factors. To this end the ATC falls back on the data from the CAN bus.

The otherwise usual high damping of the joint leads to a strong tendency to understeer in curves and increased tire wear on the front axle, this vehicle’s joint runs freely under normal running conditions and is attenuated only by the friction of the elements.

Cameras.

Total overview of every situation.

A condition and challenge for safely driving a large capacity bus is an overview of its surroundings, especially in the vicinity of the rear section. The CapaCity already simplifies the view by virtue of its single-pivot construction. In addition, several exterior cameras provide an overview of what's happening in the area of the rear section. Manoeuvring and backing up are as easy as with any other single-pivot bus. The 270° camera system is optionally available for even better all-round visibility. In addition, the CapaCity and CapaCity L can be equipped with the MirrorCam, which provides an even better view to the rear and to the side than conventional rear-view mirrors.

External rear camera for monitoring the pivoting area at the bus stop and in road traffic.
External rear cameras.

The CapaCity has video cameras mounted at the rear on the left and right. The driver can accordingly monitor the pivoting area when leaving a bus stop and in the middle of traffic. Two other side-mounted cameras positioned directly behind the articulation joint allow monitoring of the rear section.

Reversing cameras.

For additional safety during manoeuvring, Mercedes-Benz also offers reversing cameras as a supplement to the external rear cameras. A continuous warning tone sounds while backing up. Manoeuvring as well as backing up can therefore be comfortably mastered.

Monitoring at the doors made easy.

A concentrated driver significantly contributes to safety on the road. Electronic aids support the driver in the best possible way. On the CapaCity all doors come with a reversing device as well as horizontal door area monitoring. The third and fourth doors are fully automatic. And the double-wing doors one through four allow a fast passenger throughflow. For additional relief of the driver, the interior spaces of these doors can also be video-monitored as an optional extra.

Passenger compartment monitoring.

Installed video monitoring cameras can monitor events in the bus. A video monitoring system can not only improve the perceived safety for the bus driver and passengers, it can also deter hooligans committing acts of vandalism in the vehicle and record acts of violence.

The data is transmitted to the monitor in the bus driver's workstation. The bus driver can then better discern and assess certain situations and events occurring in the passenger compartment and if necessary react to any threat. The vehicle is labelled with pictograms to inform passengers that the vehicle is video-monitored. Together with the video monitoring, they increase the perceived safety for your driver and the passengers and thereby enhance the attractiveness of public transport. The video monitoring system is optional equipment.

For more information on the functioning of the video monitoring and data storage, contact our bus sales advisor.

LED headlights for low beam and high beam

See and be seen.

The low beam and high beam benefit from the outstanding luminous efficacy of the integral LED headlights, which also use significantly less energy than standard lights. They provide broad and precise illumination of the road. Another safety benefit is the temperature of the light, which is similar to that of daylight and makes the eyes tire less quickly. The LED lights assure a long service life and low degradation (decrease in luminosity).

The light cone of the LED headlights is precisely defined. More brightness and longer range provide additional safety. LED lamps are about two to three times more efficient than conventional incandescent lamps.

The headlights reach their full luminous intensity immediately after being switched on and provide wide-ranging and precise illumination of the road. They have a soft cut-off line and a subjectively larger reach. And LED headlights increase economic efficiency through their low power consumption and long service life. They have low degradation, i.e. the light output remains largely consistant over their service life.

For the most important person on board.

The driver must react fast to the threat of an accident, in order to avert the danger. Increased driving safety is also offered by the directional stability of the CapaCity chassis and the calm steering. Responsible for these qualities is the independent wheel suspension at the front and trailing axles.

The driver protection door.

The driver protection door increases safety for the driver. The shape of the cab also ensures that the temperature selected by the driver is maintained well.

Collision protection.

A crash element is installed in the front end as additional collision protection. Together with a reinforced, defined frame structure, it diverts the forces of impact directly into the substructure. The result is improved protection for the driver and his or her footwell. The specifications based on the pendulum impact test as per UNECE-R 29 are fulfilled.

All-round protection.

Accidents can never be totally ruled out. Mercedes-Benz has invested a lot to ensure that the consequences of accidents are as low as possible.

Buses are among the safest vehicles on the road – even in city traffic. Nevertheless, accidents are, of course, sometimes unavoidable. Mercedes-Benz has ensured that the consequences of the accident are as limited as possible. For example, the sidewall reinforcement of the vehicle is an essential factor in its high level of passive safety. In the event of a rear-end collision, the reinforced front section minimises the consequences of an accident and protects the driver better.

In addition, the vehicle has partition walls, grab rails and special seating which absorb energy in an impact or if the vehicle overturns. This provides essential protection for the occupants.

Stable bodywork (body in compliance with ECE-R 66.02)

The vehicle body design is based on tried-and-tested all-round spar technology. Affording even greater rigidity, it protects passengers better in the event of a side collision.

The rigidity is defined in accordance with regulation UN ECE-R 66.02. It specifies the exact "survival space" which must be guaranteed by the structural design in the event of an accident.

After an accident.

The Rescue Guidelines.

Building safe vehicles is the top priority within the integral safety concept of Mercedes-Benz. This also includes all measures that help to mitigate the consequences of an accident. An important part of our work is therefore also targeted information for rescue workers. Because detailed knowledge of our vehicles and their safety systems helps the emergency services to reach injured persons more quickly. And thereby to save lives.

First aid – the kit.

If, despite all the safety precautions, an accident should occur, it is important to provide first aid to any injured people as quickly as possible. As the driver may also be injured in an accident and thus not always able to assist passengers, the first-aid kit and fire extinguisher aboard the vehicle are accessible and clearly marked. The first-aid kit is located in the entry area next to the driver. That means both the driver and passengers can tend to any possible injuries as quickly as possible in the event of an accident.

Design

So much expression makes an impression. Individuality is on-board for the journey in the CapaCity and CapaCity L.

Design packages for the CapaCity L.

Give your CapaCity L a special, unmistakable look. Mercedes-Benz offers Metro or Tram design packages geared to the design idiom and dimensions of the full-size bus. The optional Metro design package comprises side panelling for the roof-mounted attachments, while the Tram design package features full-length side panelling including the bellows of the articulation joint. Optionally available are a smooth front-end flap, a visual extension of the tail lamps and covers for the non-steered wheels. And everything is freely combinable.

Thanks to the extensive special equipment, you can design the CapaCity and the CapaCity L totally as you desire.
Handrail system.

Curved and clearly partitioned grab rails not only provide safety, but also assist passengers through the bus like a visual guideline. Thanks to its distinct flexibility, the grab rail system allows you to arrange the vehicle interior as you wish and require.

Seating.

The same also applies to the wide variety of optionally available types of seats and seating arrangements in a large selection of colours, patterns and materials. Folding seats in the areas for standing passengers increase the variability. Standing passengers can also be accommodated in front of the articulation joint, with folding seats optionally added to the area. The standing area in the rear section can be further extended by a shortened platform and removal of a double seat. As an alternative to the three passenger seats directly behind the fourth door, leaning areas with an additional stowage facility are possible.

Doors.

Low entries and four wide double-wing doors ensure an excellent passenger throughflow and facilitate entering and exiting. The CapaCity L is also available in a 5-door version. This variant is further optimised for an even faster passenger throughflow along especially busy routes.

Added comfort.

Double-glazed side windows, air conditioning for the driver and passengers or TFT monitors for passenger information are only a few of the many possibilities. Additional special use areas can also be allocated, to the right in front of the second door, for example. Here passengers with pushchairs, walking frames or wheelchairs can be easily accommodated.

Comfort for the driver

Change: yes. Adjust: no.

Change: yes. Adjust: no. The use of proven components from the Citaro in the CapaCity has great practical advantages. For example, the driver will find the spacious and ergonomic cockpit already familiar from the perfectly designed workplace of the Citaro. The driver takes his or her seat on a raised platform in the CapaCity – on eye level with the passengers. This allows a superb 360 degree view. The AquaBlade® windscreen wipers also ensure a good view at all times, minimising both driving noise and power consumption thanks to their dynamic design. Important vehicle information can be retrieved at a glance from the coloured and easy-to-read central display.

Important vehicle information can be retrieved at a glance from the coloured and easy-to-read central display.

Multifunction steering wheel and instrument panel.

The multifunction steering wheel allows easy and quick operation of features. It also comes with a rest break position and – in conjunction with the instrument panel – can be perfectly adjusted in tilt and height to the driver's personal preferences. The practical stowage areas create a clutter-free driver's cockpit.

Reversing cameras.

External rear camera for monitoring the pivoting area at the bus stop and in road traffic.
