Economy

Every bus costs money. The Citaro saves it.

The perfect drive.

BlueEFFICIENCY Power engines with BlueTEC 6 are not only impressive because of their enormous economic efficiency, but also because of their excellent environmental compatibility. The engines ensure a drastic reduction in nitrogen oxides and particles in exhaust gas. Pollutants have reached the detection limit as a result. Independent investigations confirm that Citaro emission levels are even considerably lower than Euro VI limits under practical conditions. An impressive advance that once again sees the public service bus exceeding all expectations.

A real eco system.

Other components such as the lighting system, optional air conditioning system* or the electrically operated pivot-and-slide doors also have an effect on fuel consumption. The Citaro also has optimised battery management on board. All components are perfectly tuned to one another using intelligent electronics.

A bus only earns money when it is on the road.

Everything in the Citaro is designed to help avoid expensive down times. The filters for the air extraction in the driver's area are easy to access and have a high volume which means long intervals between cleaning. All the essential components are arranged to be simple and easy to access. This ensures long maintenance intervals and short repair times.

* The air conditioning system and the refrigerator of your vehicle are filled with the refrigerant R-134a, and contain a fluorinated greenhouse gas. Notices with detailed information on the type of refrigerant used can be found on the respective unit. In connection please note the instructions in the owner’s manual for your vehicle.

The tried and tested Citaro modular design

Because every detail counts. A bus and its diversity.

The secret to its success is, without a doubt, based on the tried and tested Citaro modular design. This allows it to cover the complete range of transport needs of local public transport in inner-city and inter-city bus services. We have a suitable product in our range for every requirement, and transport operators can benefit from a uniform modular system and parts commonality despite the various Citaro models in existence. This makes the Citaro a best-seller worldwide and a well-loved standard bearer for the brand's image. Driven in almost every big city in Europe, it provides the backbone of many metropolitan bus lines around the world and transports passengers in Mexico, Japan and Abu Dhabi. When the Mercedes-Benz Citaro came on the scene, the world of regular-service buses was revolutionised. Since then it has steadily continued its triumphant march forward with well over 50,000 vehicles delivered and has been a standard bearer for years with assured popularity in city use.

One for all.

Striking design, perceptible comfort, comprehensive safety, a superb environmental balance sheet, excellent quality and compelling economic efficiency make the Citaro the benchmark among regular-service buses for the public transport sector. In addition it offers an unbelievable range of variation which makes it the ideal vehicle for all the tasks required in urban regular-service and inter-city bus routes.

Consistent quality.

It's not just the Citaro itself that's impressive but also the many awards it's received. It was crowned with the European "Bus of the Year" award multiple times and has been the repeat winner since 1998 in its category of "Best Commercial Vehicle".

Always at the forefront.

Mercedes-Benz has always played a pioneering role in the development of environmentally friendly, innovative drive system technologies. With BlueEFFICIENCY Power technology, a benchmark was set as a result of which the Citaro became the first regular-service bus in the world to meet the Euro VI standard. Production itself already focuses on the greatest possible environmental compatibility.

The cathodic dip priming process is almost completely free of solvents. Since 2007, the Citaro has even been available with the "Blue Angel" environmental seal. And at the end of a successful life as an urban bus, its components are excellent candidates for recycling.

Consistent quality.

More than any other manufacturer we at Mercedes-Benz stand for high quality. The Citaro interurban bus is produced in the world’s most advanced bus production plants. Every part undergoes extensive tests and strict controls – for a long bus life and exemplary economic performance.

Technology

The first regular-service bus with Euro VI.

Specifically developed for the European market, tested and proven in the toughest of conditions from the Arctic Circle to Southern Europe, the BlueEFFICIENCY Power drive system is deployed in the Citaro. The OM 936, OM 936 h and OM 470 engines with outputs ranging from 220 to 290 kW already met the new Euro VI exhaust gas emissions standard two years before it came into effect.

The powerful, efficient, future-proof engine ensures a drastic reduction in nitrogen oxides and particulates in the exhaust gas. The Citaro is the pioneer of a generation of environmentally responsible regular-service buses.

A milestone in engine development.

The BlueEFFICIENCY Power engines with BlueTec 6 are impressive not only for their high standards of environmental compatibility but also for their excellent economy. Despite the more demanding requirements the engineers have succeeded in keeping fuel consumption as low as usual. Consumption unchanged, despite Euro VI – a new milestone has been marked out by Mercedes-Benz.

This has been made possible by Common Rail Technology, amongst other innovations. In addition to the superlatively low emissions resulting from the combination of SCR technology, demand-oriented exhaust gas recirculation and particulate filters, there is the superlatively high performance of the engines thanks to new turbocharging technology. Delivering optimum performance, an extremely smooth ride and easy handling.

A further advantage – the recuperation module.

The recuperation module regulates the power management and thereby reduces fuel consumption.

When the vehicle brakes, the alternators delivery free electricity (from the deceleration energy), which is briefly buffered in the capacitors. When the bus starts off again, the capacitors supply the on-board electrical system. The alternators continue running during idling in order not to stress the engine (torque).

Hybrid technology for the drive system*

What is better for transport companies the environment: independent hybrid bus models or economical hybrid technology available as optional equipment?

Mercedes-Benz has opted for an innovative hybrid module which is a world first, allowing hybrid technology to be selected as optional equipment for a broad range of buses and coaches with the OM 936 diesel and M 936 natural-gas engines. Instead of expensive stand-alone hybrid buses, numerous models benefit from an inexpensive and efficient hybrid technology.

The efficient and compact hybrid module was specially developed for the demands of regular-service buses in towns and busy urban areas. It assists the consumption-optimised diesel and natural-gas engines of our urban buses and thus stands for economy and sustainability. The implementation of our hybrid module is unproblematic both for drivers and workshops as the selection of the "Hybrid module" optional extra results in only minimal modifications to the basic vehicle. That also ensures that our hybrid technology is particularly affordable in terms of procurement.

The module achieves a fuel saving of as much as 8.5 %, depending on the operational route and vehicle version. Thus the additional costs can be compensated for within the space of just a few years; the environment, meanwhile, benefits from the new technology right from the outset. The compact hybrid system makes your bus a highly economical and ecological all-rounder. And that means that you have the perfect combination between economy and sustainability.

More power, less consumption.

The hybrid module is designed to be both simple and robust: a disc-shaped electric motor is integrated in the drivetrain between the engine and the transmission. Two batteries are installed on the roof. Plus, there is also the voltage converter and an intelligent pulling-away management system with adapted engine control. The electric motor and voltage converter have their own coolant circuit.

In line with this, there is one important factor to bear in mind: just like the Mercedes-Benz passenger cars equipped with a hybrid drive, our hybrid module technology uses a separate 48-volt electrical system. That means that we completely do away with a complex high-voltage system and the associated safety requirements which such a system requires.

The technology operates as simply as it is designed: if the bus drives is coasting or braking, the electric motor works as a generator and creates electricity without using fuel to do so. The power generated in this way is stored as electrical energy. In higher load situations, such as when pulling away, so-called boost phases, the electric motor assists the diesel or gas engine with additional torque by calling on the energy stored in the supercaps. This relieves strain on the combustion engine and thus also means lower fuel consumption. The motors used in the hybrid module correspond to the output values of the combustion engines. The torque generated by the electric motor in the boost phase is used entirely for saving fuel. If sufficient energy is stored in the supercaps, the electric motor can also provide assistance during idling and thus also improves the efficiency of the combustion engine.

The Power Boost System (PBS).

Even better response is provided by the new Power Boost System (PBS). In brief, this technical refinement will be available for the engine rated at 260 kW. The new system is designed to guarantee better "sprint performance" when moving off, particularly on topographically demanding routes.

To achieve this, the Power Boost System pumps compressed air from the standard compressed-air system into the engine's intake tract, thereby briefly increasing air throughput. This in turn results in momentarily increased short-term starting torque, which can prove invaluable at bus stops located on inclines.

Safety

Mercedes-Benz focuses on safety.

From Sideguard Assist to passenger compartment monitoring.

Particularly in city traffic, dangers are sometimes unpredictable. Therefore all the more important that measures be taken to prevent an accident. Mercedes-Benz has equipped the Citaro urban bus with many safety features which help in mastering critical driving situations.

Every Citaro is equipped with turning assistant Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM) as standard. The optional braking assistant Preventive Brake Assist 2 warns of stationary and moving obstacles – including pedestrians and cyclists – and initiates partial braking if necessary to avoid an accident. The Citaro can also be equipped with MirrorCam, which provides better visibility to the rear and side than conventional mirrors.

The best basis for driving safety is a driver who is fully focused on traffic conditions. This is why special attention was given to the ergonomic driver's work area. In the Citaro, the driver has comfortable access to all controls and a perfect view of all the instruments. Further convenience is provided by the automatic transmission and the standard reversing camera. The Opticool windscreen and the separately controlled air conditioning system ensure that the driver is still able to concentrate even when it is hot outside.

MirrorCam

Depending on the vehicle, the images are displayed on 7" and 15" monitors. The two high-resolution displays show the different fields of vision. The photodiodes integrated in the monitors detect the incident light and adjust the brightness of the respective monitor individually. To make it easier for the driver to evaluate the images, the 15" variants have three different guide lines. Together with the permanently calibrated vehicle end line, the distance line assists the driver in assessing approaching objects. The Overtaking Assist overlay is activated from a speed of 10 km/h with flashing, in order to safely assist overtaking or turning. In addition, the display for Blind Spot Assist is installed in the monitor.

The modern MirrorCam system provides a clear and full view of the road traffic. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the driving safety is improved and the risk of accidents is minimised. The extended field of vision enables the driver to see pedestrians, cyclists and other road users in the surrounding area. This eliminates the blind spot when turning right.

Traffic Sign Assist (TSA)

The innovative Traffic Sign Assist offers maximum safety and comfort on the road. Thanks to GPS and camera support, the vehicle speed is constantly compared with the current traffic regulations.

The system is designed to provide dedicated and appropriate feedback if the permitted speed is exceeded. Thanks to the state-of-the-art instrument cluster, the driver receives both visual and audible signals that immediately draw attention to the speed.

360° camera

The 360° camera system consists of four cameras that capture the immediate vehicle environment and generate an indirect all-round view. The associated 10" screen is located on the A-pillar above the cockpit. This system allows pedestrians, cyclists and obstacles to be seen even in areas that are otherwise not visible to the driver. In this way, the system increases road safety, as collision hazards can be detected and, at best, prevented.

The views from the 360° camera are available up to a speed of approx. 20 mph (30 km/h) when driving forwards and always when reversing. Note: Risk of accidents due to objects protruding into the traffic area above the cameras, e.g. protruding roofs, exterior mirrors of your own and other buses, etc. The cameras cannot detect these objects. Particularly in the 360° view, the impression of a free environment can be created even though objects above the mounted cameras protrude into the turning space.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) is an active system for increasing driving safety and driving stability. It makes a noticeable contribution to reducing the risk of skidding during cornering or evasive manoeuvres. This is achieved by specifically controlling the braking forces on each individual wheel in situations where the driving dynamics are critical, for example, if the bus is driven at the limit when cornering. At the same time the engine output is reduced. A possible "breaking-loose" of the bus is thereby prevented by the finely metered braking - within the limits of the physical possibilities. ESP® monitors, among other things, the lateral acceleration of the bus. If, on long bends – such as motorway exits – or during rapid lane changes, the bus reaches a critical driving situation, the vehicle speed is automatically reduced until driving stability is achieved again.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) supports driving stability during critical braking operations and ensures that the vehicle remains steerable. The braking forces acting on the individual wheels are distributed by the ABS so that even in an emergency braking situation no wheel is blocked for any length of time, and the steerability of the bus is largely maintained.

The control unit of the brake electronics records the current wheel speed via the pole wheels and wheel sensors. When braking, the system controls the brake pressure at the individual wheel brake cylinders via the control valves. During emergency braking and braking with locking wheels, the system opens and closes the control valves of the wheel brake cylinders fully automatically at very short intervals, thus preventing locking and keeping the vehicle steerable.

The cornering light function

The cornering light function provides even more safety through better visibility conditions at night-time when cornering at intersections and roundabouts and when manoeuvring in forward driving and reversing.

The cornering light function is activated automatically at speeds of up to approx. 35 km/h if the main headlamps are on, the turn indicator is actuated or the steering wheel is turned. One of the two front fog lamps then cuts in to illuminate an area on the side in front of the vehicle that is not being illuminated by the main headlamps.

The intelligent electronic system switches the cornering lights on or off progressively in the same way as a dimmer switch. This gives the driver's eyes a chance to adapt to the change in light.

Sideguard Assist 2 & Frontguard Assist

Sideguard Assist 2

Sideguard Assist 2 is a safety assistance system that supports the driver in critical situations when turning right or turning left when visibility is possibly restricted. The system is designed to help detect moving obstacles within the system limits, and warns the driver so as to avoid critical situations or reduce the consequences of accidents when turning off or changing lanes.

The side areas of the vehicle are constantly monitored. As a result, vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists who may be in the blind spot are detected on both the front passenger side and the driver’s side. The radar system precisely detects the movements and warns the driver of possible collisions. The intuitive user interface and clear warnings allow the driver to drive safely and relaxed.

Preventive Brake Assist 2

With Preventive Brake Assist 2, Daimler Buses offers the second generation of Active Brake Assist. The system warns of collisions with moving pedestrians and cyclists as well as stationary and moving objects. In the event of a serious risk of collision, the driver is alerted by a visual and acoustic warning and partial braking is initiated automatically.

Warning cascade and braking intervention are specifically designed for use in urban traffic. In the event of an impending collision with pedestrians or cyclists as well as with moving or stationary objects, Preventive Brake Assist 2 issues a warning. The driver is warned both visually by a flashing red triangle in the central display and acoustically, and simultaneously initiates partial braking. This braking intervention is maintained either until the driver intervenes, the situation is no longer critical, or the bus comes to a stop.

Thanks to the interaction of front radar, short-range radar and the front camera, the area up to 250 metres in front of the bus is constantly scanned. This assistance is ensured up to a speed of 60 km/h. In snow, rain, fog, heavy spray, glare/dazzling conditions, direct sunlight or constantly changing light conditions, the system range and detection of vehicles and people may be impaired.

The unique ATC articulation limiter system in the Citaro G.

Safe, manoeuvrable and stable. The Citaro G has the same highly developed assistance systems and a body just as stable as any other Citaro. It can also be manoeuvred safely on narrow roads. Its front and rear section are connected to a unique jack-knife control system (ATC) by a proven low-floor articulation. This guarantees high stability and manoeuvrability. The driver can even manoeuvre it comfortably in reverse gear. This is aided by the independent suspension on the front axle.

It makes the Citaro G one of the most manoeuvrable vehicles in its class — with ride comfort almost comparable to that of a coach.

ATC (Articulation Turntable Controller): stabilises articulated buses in critical driving situations almost like ESP®.

Both agile and robust. The Articulation Turntable Controller (ATC) developed by Mercedes-Benz is a sophisticated anti-jackknife system for articulated buses. This swivel joint and its control system form one of the core components of the vehicle.

The otherwise usual high damping of the joint leads to a strong tendency to understeer in curves and increased tire wear on the front axle, this vehicle’s joint runs freely under normal running conditions and is attenuated only by the friction of the elements.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM)*

The wireless tyre pressure monitoring with indication in the multifunctional display is an electronic safety system that permanently monitors the air pressure of all tyres. Tyre pressure losses are displayed within the system limits.

The right tyre pressure contributes to driving safety and significantly reduced fuel consumption. Even a tyre pressure set 0.5 bar too low can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%. The wheel electronics are positioned on the valve on the inside of the rim. The sensors record the data relevant to the tyre pressure and transmit it to the display instrument.

The tyre pressure is recorded both when the vehicle is stationary and when it is moving. Caution! A sudden loss of pressure, for example due to the penetration of a foreign body, is not immediately indicated by the tyre pressure monitoring system. Damage to the tyres that does not lead to acute pressure loss is also not detected by the monitoring system. Here, visual inspection by the driver is and remains essential.

Passenger compartment monitoring.

Installed video monitoring cameras can monitor events in the bus. A video monitoring system can not only improve the perceived safety for the bus driver and passengers, it can also deter hooligans committing acts of vandalism in the vehicle and record acts of violence.

The data is transmitted to the monitor in the bus driver's workstation. The bus driver can then better discern and assess certain situations and events occurring in the passenger compartment and if necessary react to any threat. The vehicle is labelled with pictograms to inform passengers that the vehicle is video-monitored. Together with the video monitoring, they increase the perceived safety for your driver and the passengers and thereby enhance the attractiveness of public transport. The video monitoring system is optional equipment.

For more information on the functioning of the video monitoring and data storage, contact our bus sales advisor.

Only the best for the most important person on board.

The driver must react fast to the threat of an accident, in order to avert the danger. The Citaro provides assistance with its directionally stable suspension and smooth steering. This is achieved by the independent suspension on the front axle.

The pendulum impact test in accordance with UNECE-R 29.

There is particular emphasis on driver safety in the Citaro Ü. The UNECE-R 29 Directive applicable to trucks, which has defined the survival space for the driver in a head-on collision in a truck since 1975, has been voluntarily adopted as the standard for the new Citaro Ü. Compliance with UNECE-R 29 is checked by means of a pendulum impact test.

Protection in the event of a head-on collision which is based on the UNECE-R 29 standard and unparalleled amongst urban regular-service buses, comes together with the even stiffer structure of the frame to increase passive safety.

The driver protection door.

The driver protection door increases safety for the driver. The shape of the cab also ensures that the temperature selected by the driver is maintained well.

Fire extinguishing system for the engine compartment.

If a temperature of approximately 160 °C is exceeded, the driver sees an alarm in the driver's display as well as the message "Engine compartment fire". Additionally, an acoustic warning tone is emitted and the extinguishing process initiated automatically.

In the case of a fire, the pressurised detection line (Firetrace) breaks and sprays an extinguishing mixture made of water, engine coolant and a special additive via a series of nozzles around the entire engine compartment. The water mist evaporates as a result of the high temperatures and displaces the oxygen. The engine compartment is thus cooled rapidly, the fire extinguished immediately and re-ignition of the fire prevented.

Advantages.

  • Low scope of repairs after the system is triggered
  • Fine water mist reduces temperatures are extinguishes the fire immediately
  • Film-forming substances make it more difficult for the fire to re-ignite
  • Not harmful to humans, engine and systems
  • Environmentally friendly extinguishing substance with anti-freeze properties down as low as -35 °C
  • Automatic triggering at high temperatures (over 160 °C or in the case of fire)
  • The system is guaranteed to function in any installation position

All-round protection.

Buses are among the safest vehicles on the road – even in city traffic. Nevertheless, accidents are, of course, sometimes unavoidable. Mercedes-Benz has ensured that the consequences of the accident are as limited as possible. For example, the sidewall reinforcement of the vehicle is an essential factor in its high level of passive safety. In the event of a rear-end collision, the reinforced front section minimises the consequences of an accident and protects the driver better.

In addition, the vehicle has partition walls, grab rails and special seating which absorb energy in an impact or if the vehicle overturns. This provides essential protection for the occupants.

Stable bodywork (body in compliance with ECE-R 66.02)

The strength of the bus/touring coach body is also an important factor for the level of passive safety of a bus/touring coach. Its resilience can mitigate the consequences of an accident. The high strength of our vehicles' bus/touring coach bodies is guaranteed in part by all-round, weight-optimised annular frames.

The rigidity is defined in accordance with regulation UN ECE-R 66.02. It specifies the exact "survival space" which must be guaranteed by the structural design in the event of an accident.

Invisible but important advances have been made behind the attractive façade of the Citaro. The bodyshell is still based on the proven annular frame construction ‒ a first-generation Citaro innovation ‒ but it is now even stiffer and thus protects the passengers even better against side impacts.

After an accident.

The Rescue Guidelines.

Building safe vehicles is the top priority within the integral safety concept of Mercedes-Benz. This also includes all measures that help to mitigate the consequences of an accident. An important part of our work is therefore also targeted information for rescue workers. Because detailed knowledge of our vehicles and their safety systems helps the emergency services to reach injured persons more quickly. And thereby to save lives.

First aid – the kit.

If, despite all the safety precautions, an accident should occur, it is important to provide first aid to any injured people as quickly as possible. As the driver may also be injured in an accident and thus not always able to assist passengers, the first-aid kit and fire extinguisher aboard the vehicle are accessible and clearly marked. The first-aid kit is located in the entry area next to the driver. That means both the driver and passengers can tend to any possible injuries as quickly as possible in the event of an accident.

Design

When the appearance fits the image.

Mercedes-Benz buses are part of the face of many European cities. That face becomes a little bit more distinctive with the Citaro. We have made its already powerful design idiom stand out even more, with many new design details such as the striking front panel, the contoured wheel guards or the embossed Citaro lettering on the rear.

The modern side windows with their dynamically curved bottom edge are also eye-catching: the eye is drawn to them even from the outside. The optional new destination display* can even change colour – you can choose between green, blue or red for the display.

Say goodbye to boredom.

The Citaro interior is characterised by clear lines and loving attention to detail. Passengers will feel good as soon as they board. This is thanks not only to the brighter lighting in the entry area but also to the pleasantly designed passenger compartment. Additional equipment lines give you greater freedom still when designing the interior. Whether rows of double seats or groups of seats facing each other – you can decide upon the zones into which you wish to divide the interior. All done according to your wishes – and those of your passengers.

Comfort for the driver

The driver's area.

The best protection for passengers is still a driver who is fully concentrated. Which is why the driver's seat must be shielded from distractions and operation should be intuitive, with controls which are easy to reach. The Citaro sets new standards in this area, too.

Everything is in the right place here. Nothing should distract a Citaro driver from his or her work. This is what we've worked to achieve. The driver's seat position has been raised slightly to give better all-round vision ‒ the driver is now on eye-level with the passengers. In addition, through extending the front, legroom has been increased ‒ while improving collision protection at the same time, too. The change gives an optimal seat position on long working days.

Driver's window & climate control.

Keeping a cool head at all times.

The new driver’s window provides better ventilation and easy access to the exterior mirror. In order to maintain exemplary vision above and ahead, the windscreen is positioned 60 mm higher. The destination display has even been raised by 72 mm. This results in even better vision when looking upwards at an angle, for example, when looking at traffic lights.

The driver also benefits from the lowering of the side window sill. The higher position of the driver's seat thus improves all-round vision, for example, the view of the traffic ahead.

Ventilation of the driver's area.

There are two more large round air nozzles for air intake in the instrument panel. There is room for a larger pollen filter behind the larger air intake grille which is to the side immediately behind the driver's seat. The new air extraction unit behind the driver's seat ensures greater air flow through the cab.

Another new feature: the front box for ventilating and heating the driver's area has been positioned centrally. This ensures more even demisting of the entire windscreen. It is also electrically heated.

Stowage compartments.

The vehicle isn't just comfortable to sit in, it's spacious too.

Additional DIN-compliant slide-in units provide flexible and easily-accessible options to increase storage in the Citaro Ü. There are additional stowage compartments for the driver's personal belongings in the bag compartment and on the instrument support.

Everything is optimally protected in the Citaro Ü – and that includes the driver as well. This is ensured by the driver protection door, which protects the driver from unexpected attacks. Depending on the intended deployment of the vehicle and the degree of protection desired, there are four constructions available. Up to eight pieces of equipment fit into the DIN-compliant slots: they can be easily accessed and easily read. The loudspeaker for the driver's area is also fitted into the frame. If the vehicle is fitted with internal or external cameras, the display is anchored by means of an interlocking fit to the underside of the carrier.

Switches & buttons.

Buttons and switches are positioned in line with the latest thinking on ergonomics.

The positioning of the buttons and switches in the Citaro's cockpit corresponds to the latest findings about ergonomics. Thus, for example, the buttons that are continually used in everyday operation for opening and closing the doors are all positioned in a row on a lower ledge to the right-hand side. The switches/buttons for the automatic transmission that are generally used less frequently are positioned in a horizontal row of their own further forward.

The light switch is positioned on the left. Apart from being easily accessible, its position ensures that it is always in the driver's field of vision.

Instrument panel & multifunction steering wheel.

Everything here is totally intuitive.

It is also easier to read the instruments and operate the switches in the Citaro: we have improved the shape and the grouping of both, and used more distinctive colours to make the tachometer and rev counter stand out. The multifunction steering wheel is also a new feature in the Citaro. Menu navigation is simple, by means of the function buttons on the steering wheel. Whether a status message or an operating indicator – everything is shown clearly and comprehensibly on the colour display.

The Citaro is ready for all eventualities.

The instrument panel is of such a stable construction that additional units weighing up to 1.5 kg and 2.5 kg could be attached to the left and right respectively. In such a case, anchorage adapters and cable ducting can be ordered as optional equipment ex factory ‒ the customer's own equipment can thus be integrated in a much more elegant way than before.

With attachments it is important to take care that the driver's field of vision is in no way restricted.

The driver protection door.

The new driver protection door can protect the driver from unexpected attacks. Depending on the intended deployment of the vehicle and the degree of protection desired, there are four modular constructions available.

The door is now hinged at the rear and opens at the front. This means the driver can get directly and really quickly from the main front door to his/her workstation and vice versa. In the event of an attack the driver protection door secures the escape possibilities for the driver.

Suspension & steering.

A suspension that should be hailed as a masterpiece.

With its independent suspension on the front axle, the Citaro has set new standards in regular-service buses. Great straight-line stability and excellent steerability together with comfortable springs ensure the same quiet and easy handling as found in a touring coach.

Comfort for the passengers

I feel good here – I'll come again.

A passenger's dream.

Low steps and low-floor design throughout make boarding and exiting the bus easy and help to speed up passenger movement through the bus. At a width of 2.55 m and with an extended wheelbase, the interior has a spacious and airy feel to it. This is also due to the large panoramic windows which have a lower-slung window line.

In all sections of the vehicle, the standing room is extremely generous, even for tall people.

Make your passengers feel comfortable.

Passenger seats.

The seats of the Citaro are extraordinarily robust and resistant, whilst also being very comfortable. This is because the seat cushions have ergonomically shaped upholstery, thereby offering optimal comfort. They are really pleasant to sit in. And on the occasions when passengers have to stand, they are guaranteed to feel stable and supported using our flexible support rail system – all the way through from the front to the back of the bus.

Touring coach comfort in the city.

The Citaro sets benchmarks in handling comfort, as well. Regardless of the number of passengers or the state of the roads, this comfortable regular-service bus has the perfect suspension for every situation. This is provided by the optional roll and pitch control which works with electronically-controlled shock absorbers. It automatically stabilises the vehicle and improves handling comfort.

Perfect hold & stop request button.

And on the occasions when passengers have to stand, they are guaranteed to feel stable and supported using our flexible handrail system – all the way through from the front to the back of the bus.

The vertical grab rails essentially have the same outward curving shape as their predecessors, which have become a standard for the sector. They are now split evenly into two rows and anchored into a ceiling section running the length of the bus, giving the interior a calm, uncluttered appearance.

Straight grab rails are installed in the front area. They are positioned further out to the sides of the vehicle and optically open up the vehicle interior to boarding passengers. The horizontal grab rails are now installed in front of the vertical rods; this also lends a calm look in the passenger area, whilst also creating a guiding line when looking through the space.

The new stop request buttons throughout the compartment can be easily located, in particular making things easier for passengers with impaired vision.

New doors.

The new inward-swinging doors, manufactured in-house, are lightweight and low-maintenance and fit snugly at the bottom when closed thanks to an optimised rubber seal. In this way, the majority of wind noises in the interior are reduced. The new doors stand out for their low weight, sturdy frames and highly accurate fit. The door wings available as optional equipment are individually controllable and can be operated separately.

The Citaro can now optionally be fitted with a pivot-and-slide door, exclusive to the Citaro, for the front entry door. It opens to the front and, slightly tilted, slides past the right exterior mirror without touching it. The new pivot-and-slide door is lightweight and extremely stable, and was optimised also with a view to minimising maintenance.

Mobility & climate.

Mobility.

Wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility can also board the vehicle without difficulties. The Citaro can of course be equipped to a specification suitable for disabled users in line with applicable EU directives. The vehicle's specification already complies with ECE Directive R107.

Climate master.

The climate in the Citaro is truly to be appreciated – at any time of the year. Thermostatically-controlled wall-mounted heaters provide feel-good temperatures in winter. The perforated inner ceiling supports the automatic ventilation of the passenger compartment. And you can further increase your passengers' feeling of comfort with the powerful air conditioning system with integral roof heating.

Comfort for the passengers in the Citaro LE.

A true Citaro – on the inside too.

Its relation to the Citaro family is clearly evident in the passenger area of the Citaro LE, which includes wall-mounted cantilever seats for the urban bus as well as twin seats with aisle-side supporting feet and the classic grab rails which curve outwards at the top. The raised ceiling in the rear area faithfully reflects the design of the front ceiling area.

The cross duct in the transition from the low-floor front section to the raised rear section conveniently accommodates a destination display or a monitor for the rear rows of seats. Two low steps in front of the rear axle, each 195 mm high, lead up to the raised-floor area at the rear. Thanks to the roof being raised by 310 mm here, the feeling of spaciousness at the rear is as pleasant as at the front of the bus. The floor-to-ceiling height in front of the rear platform is a generous 2.05 m. The raised floor sector rises only gently after the second door, and dispenses completely with steps.

This benefits passive safety and makes it easier to clean the vehicle. All the seats in the rear of the bus face forwards. The seat rows rise steadily from front to rear like cinema seats. The ample rear bench seat can accommodate five passengers.

Travel comfort like that of a touring coach – RO 440 rear axle.

The new RO 440 bus drive axle for all high-floor and high-deck buses represents a comprehensive further development of the previous axle: not only is it lighter, but thanks to its optimised gearing, it is quieter and more efficient due to reduced oil splashing losses in the axle, which reduces consumption noticeably.

Citaro hybrid

Every bus costs money. The Citaro hybrid saves it.

There are many factors in operating a bus that cost money. You can also do several things to drive even more economically: roughly one-third of the costs can be actively influenced. We will show you the overall economic benefits of our buses and services in relation to investment, consumption, maintenance and residual value.

Economy is a question of technology.

With every Citaro hybrid, you have a comprehensive economical solution in your fleet. Its drive is not a transitional technology towards entirely electric driving. On the contrary, with it, Mercedes-Benz is optimising the Euro VI combustion engines to maximum efficiency in a unique way. The result: the Citaro hybrid with its favourable Total Cost of Ownership pays off.

Those who brake, win.

The Citaro hybrid was specially developed for the demands of regular-service bus routes in urban conurbations and stands for contemporary mobility with reduced consumption. The economical diesel engine is assisted by the additional drive power of a highly efficient, compact hybrid module.

The 14 kW electric motor generates energy when coasting and braking. It therefore assists the diesel engine when pulling away. Depending on use, this can reduce the fuel consumption by up to 8.5 percent.

Clever assistance systems.

Numerous assistance systems support the driver. The Citaro hybrid is equipped as standard with the turning assistant Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and the Tyre Pressure Monitoring. The optional Preventive Brake Assist 2 warns of obstacles and people in front of the vehicle and initiates partial braking in the event of danger. On the Citaro G hybrid, the Articulation Turntable Controller (ATC) guarantees optimal steering behaviour by the rapid, requirements-based hydraulic damping of the articulation. The optional MirrorCam provides better visibility to the rear and sides and thereby ensures greater safety.

Meanwhile, Acceleration Skid Control (ASR) prevents the drive wheels from spinning. With the Electropneumatic Braking System (EBS) the stopping distance is significantly shortened, as the brakes are actuated more quickly and precisely. Ensuring pre-emptive braking and manoeuvring are the Preventive Brake Assist 2 and Sideguard Assist 2 systems.

Safely integrated hybrid technology.

The virtually maintenance-free hybrid storage module is located outside the crash area—at the back of the roof. By using the innovative 48 V low-voltage technology, the Citaro hybrid poses no increased safety risk and, moreover, the low-voltage technology requires no change in service and maintenance— saving additional costs.

Electric engine

With every Citaro hybrid you have a comprehensive economic solution on your timetable. Its drive system is a uniquely optimised version of the Euro VI combustion engine which delivers the greatest possible efficiency.

The interplay of combustion engine for the base load and electric motor for peak loads ensures a high level of energy efficiency of the drive system when driving. The components designed for greatly varying loads are constructed in a very robust manner. Their high durability is comparable with those of conventional combustion-engine powertrains.

Energy storage unit.

With its high power-to-size ratio, the innovative supercaps use condenser technology to store the electrical energy from and for the electric motor, saving space and doing so safely. They are designed for the continuous, quick change between charging and discharging in a typical urban bus cycle and have a high level of durability.

Inverter.

Its electronics convert the electrical energy stored as direct current into alternating current for powering the electric motor. Its space-saving water cooling ensures a high level of operating safety.

Fuel-efficient axle.

The efficiency-optimised lightweight running axle also contributes to increased efficiency in the Citaro hybrid: on the one hand, through fuel savings due to the lower running resistance, and on the other, through less maintenance and a prolonged maintenance interval — from 180,000 to 240,000 km.

In the Citaro hybrid, the intelligent eco steering electrohydraulic steering system also contributes to high energy efficiency. It works in a way that is requirements-optimised, while contributing to reduced fuel consumption in public service applications.

The best remains.

The Citaro hybrid provides its passengers every comfort that the renowned Citaro models have to offer, without exception. No item of equipment in the interior is influenced by the hybrid technology, itself invisible to the passengers and driver. You already feel in good hands when you get in.

This is ensured, among other things, by the generous space concept, pleasant seats, ergonomically optimised grab rails and the comfortable headroom. Various equipment lines can be individually chosen for each planned use. Therefore everyone will find the ideal vehicle for their intended use. Depending on the equipment line, a powerful air-conditioning system*, as well as the integral roof heater and side wall heaters can make the time on-board a pleasant one.

For more detailed information please see the relevant technical information brochure.

The Citaro

The basis of the bestseller.

It is the platform for the success of a legendary family of vehicles: the twelve-metre-long, two-axle Citaro with low-floor access combines attractive design with high efficiency and economy. In spite of the many variants that now complement it, this model remains the classic among city buses.

External charms and inner values.

12.14 m long, 2.55 m wide and 3.12 m high: The perfect dimensions offered by the Citaro. The design is impressive too. The typical Mercedes look is likeable and clear, thanks to the almond-shaped headlamps. It therefore comes as no surprise that the top model among city buses never fails to attract attention. The attractive Citaro doesn’t just shine on the outside. The elements on the inside are outstanding as well. After all, every centimetre has been carefully thought out.

Efficiency can be managed.

For increased energy efficiency, the electrohydraulic steering feature — intelligent eco steering — is available as an option. It works as needed while contributing to reduced fuel consumption in urban scheduled services.

Sit back and relax.

The interior is a passenger’s dream come true.

Spacious, friendly and comfortably equipped: this is how the Citaro city buses welcome their passengers. Thanks to a spacious interior concept and comfortable seats, ergonomic handrails and a pleasant standing height. The low entry height and continuous low-floor throughout also favour a comfortable entry and exit, and a rapid flow of passengers.

Depending on the equipment variant, a powerful air conditioning system*, the integrated roof heater and side wall heaters also contribute to passenger wellbeing in your bus. A modern lighting concept gives the high-quality passenger compartment a lot of light when needed.

The driver’s work area offers plenty of room for driving pleasure.

A focused driver represents the most important protection for the passengers. And it is with this in mind that Mercedes-Benz has done everything it could to make the driver’s work area in the Citaro city buses as well organised and as ergonomic as possible. The driver’s seat is elevated — at eye level with passengers and with excellent all-round visibility.

Additionally, the AquaBlade windscreen wipers which, thanks to their dynamic design, minimise both driving noise and fuel consumption, ensure good visibility at all times. Instruments are clearly arranged and easy to reach. The multifunction steering wheel and high-resolution central display give the driver direct access to all relevant functions and information. Independent suspension ensures outstanding comfort of an entirely different kind: excellent straight-line stability and superior manoeuvrability, in conjunction with a comfortable suspension, provide a quiet and comfortable ride similar to that of a coach.

The Citaro K

Perfect for narrow city streets.

When it comes to systematic economy and impressive comfort, the smallest member of the Citaro family turns out to be a big performer. There’s no question that the Citaro K is and remains the benchmark in compact public service buses.

A fixed size.

It delivers amazing size with a maximum of 32 seats in the case of the two-door and a maximum transport capacity of 89 people in the three-door variant. The compact city bus is thus ideal for routes with a lower passenger volume.

The Citaro K scores points with its unmistakeable design and an impressively small turning circle of just 17.28 metres. It also allows the compact public service bus to negotiate the narrow, winding alleys of historic town centres with ease.

Tested by engineers, drivers and auditors: The Citaro K.

Low steps mean high comfort.

The low entry height and low floor throughout the bus make it possible: passengers are happy to board the Citaro K and immediately feel comfortable. In the friendly and generous interior, guests have everything they also appreciate on the large model: a bright entry area, large panoramic windows, ergonomic passenger seats, a comfortable height and the flexible handrail system.

A speedy turnover.

Wide boarding and alighting doors ensure a speedy passenger flow on the Citaro K. However, an additional door means this is even quicker. As the latest addition to the Citaro K modular system, the compact urban public service bus is therefore now available in both a two and three-door version.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

And that’s a good thing, because most of the parts in the compact public service bus are the same as those of the 12-metre Citaro. This offers many advantages with regard to technology, comfort, safety and economy. The Citaro K embodies generous technical reserves, thanks to the high-performance units.

The six-cylinder OM 936 or the OM 936 h kicking in, puts a smile on every driver's face: Thanks to the compact design, the power is used effectively. It also impresses with the same innovative safety features and the same uncompromising comfort as any Citaro. Above all, however, the Citaro K scores points with its manoeuvrability and small turning circle of just 17.28 metres. No road is too narrow for a city bus, especially in old towns.

The Citaro G

Capacity for public transport.

The Citaro G represents the logical extension to those qualities which define economical and reliable public transportation. Conceived for high passenger capacities. Made for your success.

True greatness comes from within.

Handling of large passenger numbers is the true domain of the 18.13 m long Citaro G. The three-door and four-door versions can accommodate up to 164 passengers. A continuous low floor from the first to last row of seats ensures that passengers enjoy a high degree of comfort and guarantees a speedy passenger flow.

On an individual passenger basis, the Citaro G is particularly good value in terms of purchasing and maintenance costs. It is therefore frequently the most economical solution on routes with high passenger volumes.

Size, strength, agility and stamina: The Citaro G.

Capacity plus quality equals economic efficiency.

You profit on busy routes not only from the Citaro G’s considerable passenger carrying capacity, but primarily from its high degree of reliability. The Citaro G is manufactured using the proven, high-quality components of the Citaro modular system and impresses with quality in every detail.

Added to this are particularly economical Euro VI engines with 220 kW to 260 kW (OM 936 h), plus 265 kW and 290 kW (OM 470). Their efficient, clean fuel combustion pays off quickly for you in times of persistently high fuel prices. Outstanding ease of maintenance also contributes to a considerable reduction in downtimes. Ultimately, this leads to a permanently low total cost of ownership, not least through attractive residual values.

Perfect for the metropolis.

The challenges are similar in many cities across the world: a growing need for mobility leads to gridlock and higher pollution. The answer is Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) flexible bus systems. In these systems, large buses run on numerous main axes at a high frequency.

Separate bus lanes and comfortable and safe boarding at tation. The ideal application area for the Citaro G, not least because in many cities, BRT system are supported by Mercedes-Benz.

The Citaro LE

The clever combination.

Flexibility is a strength.

The Citaro LE cleverly combines the advantages of low-floor and high-floor buses. This gives you additional room for manoeuvre in your fleet. The Citaro LE also sets standards for safety, as it has the same highly developed assistance systems and a body as stable as any other Citaro.

The special feature is the combination.

The Citaro LE combines the comfort of low-floor technology with the cost effectiveness of high-floor technology. You can therefore deploy the Citaro LE flexibly and utilise it correctly — not just in public transportation, but also for interurban routes or short excursions. It offers your passengers a sophisticated level of comfort in all cases.

The Citaro LE brings together many advantages but stays streamlined.

Exemplary comfort.

Total low-floor capability up to the central door ensures a high degree of comfort, even for passengers with limited mobility. At the same time, a speedy passenger flow is guaranteed. Your passengers will also be impressed by the clear, spacious interior and first-class suspension, and the comfortable seats which are all forward facing in the rear of the vehicle.

In the rear area, the vehicle can be accessed comfortably via two low steps in the gently rising rear section. At 1.90 m, standing height is also comfortable in the rear area. Thanks to a rear axle from the coach sector, comfort is increased and fuel consumption simultaneously reduced.

A product of economic thinking.

In common with all vehicles in the Citaro family, the Citaro LE is also equipped with economical, low-emission Euro VI engines. That’s good for the environment and your finances. To address your wishes and requirements in every respect, the flexible and versatile earner is available with two or three doors.

In both cases it has more seats and a higher passenger capacity than a comparable low-floor vehicle, thus also offering you cost benefits in this respect.

A picture of a bus.

With its unique appearance, the Citaro LE is identifiable as a real Mercedes-Benz from even a great distance. The smooth, attractively proportioned sides harmoniously transitioning into the roofline and the back section with its dynamic lines all combine to form an outstanding vehicle that impresses in every respect. There’s no doubt that with its modern, fresh design, the Citaro LE is a persuasive advertisement for your transport service or bus company.

Low Entry: passenger-friendly and economical.

The term “low entry” says it all: From the front end right back to the centre entrance, buses in this category are genuine low-floor vehicles that are built as high-floor vehicles to the rear of the centre entrance (Door 2). This hybrid design leads on the one hand to high passenger comfort even for passengers with restricted mobility.

It also permits the uncomplicated and maintenance-friendly installation of units at the rear. Many cities demand a low-floor design in their line invitations to tender. The Citaro LE meets this requirement.
