Technology

More energy for your regular services.

Lasts longer and keeps your eCitaro on its route: the new NMC4 battery.

The eCitaro is an all-electric city bus that could only have been made by Mercedes-Benz. It combines the platform from the world’s best-selling Citaro, which has been tried and tested a thousand times over, with pioneering electromobility technology. The efficient interplay of battery and charging technology, smart networking with IT systems and its integral safety concept with innovative assistance systems make it the benchmark among all-electric city buses.

Choose from a variety of battery configurations depending on your required usage profile. The eCitaro and the eCitaro K use a minimum of four and a maximum of six battery packs with a combined capacity of up to 666 kWh. The eCitaro G can accommodate a minimum of four and a maximum of seven battery packs with a combined capacity of up to 777 kWh. When the maximum number of battery packs are installed, the NMC4 batteries can guarantee a reliable range of 600 kilometres for the rigid bus and the eCitaro K and 480 kilometres for the articulated bus – over the battery's entire service life. In practice, this means that the Mercedes-Benz fully electric low-floor city bus can cover a large proportion of bus routes.

NMC4 batteries are more robust, offering higher energy density and optimised performance, even when fast charging is used. Battery condition is continuously monitored to guarantee maximum safety. The batteries also have a uniform charging capacity of 300 kW when charging via pantograph and 150 kW when charging via CCS2 plug in the depot.

Using a CCS plug, the fully electric eCitaro can be charged with up to 150 kilowatts. Each vehicle comes with two sockets in different locations, enabling you to position your city bus either on the left or right of the charging station, as you require. This simplifies both the charging strategy and the positioning in the parking areas. There's also the possibility of charging two eCitaro buses sequentially, i.e. one after the other, at a single charger with two charging points. This avoids charging peaks and takes into account your e-buses' deployment times, which of course often vary. If you prefer interim charging, for example at an end station, the eCitaro can also adapt as needed. How? Because the eCitaro can also come fitted with a current collector (pantograph) or alternatively with charging rails on the roof, which can be connected to the fixed pantograph at a charging station. The charging interfaces can optionally be fitted with an RFID tag to ensure clear vehicle identification during charging at the depot. Both pantograph solutions enable high-performance charging with up to 300 kW charging capacity. The eCitaro is also available with combinations of plug charging and pantograph or charging rails.

Do you need an all-electric city bus that reliably meets your route planning requirements? And at any time of the year too? Welcome to the eCitaro from Mercedes-Benz! With its innovative thermal management including heat pump, it brings you to your destination reliably and at the most comfortable temperature. The energy requirement for heating, ventilation and climate control has been reduced by about 40 percent compared with the current Citaro with combustion engine. This is the latest in energy efficiency!

Safety

Integral safety concept.

Always safe: the eCitaro from Mercedes-Benz.

Its outstanding active and passive safety equipment mean that with the eCitaro from Mercedes-Benz, you can travel with confidence. Innovative assistance and camera systems support the driver in critical traffic situations and thus help to avoid accidents. The solid skeleton design offers all passengers reliable protection. A unique safety concept also covers all aspects of high-voltage technology.

Safety assistants on board with you.

The eCitaro sets standards in the active safety of all-electric city buses. Innovative assistance systems relieve the burden from your drivers – for confident and safe driving at all times. With Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist and the optional active brake assist Preventive Brake Assist 2, Mercedes-Benz protects vulnerable road users, helping to avoid accidents. Find out now how much safety can be found in every eCitaro!

The modern MirrorCam system provides a clear and full view of the road traffic. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the driving safety is improved and the risk of accidents is minimised. The extended field of vision enables the driver to see pedestrians, cyclists and other road users in the surrounding area. This eliminates the blind spot when turning right.

With Preventive Brake Assist 2, Daimler Buses offers the second generation of Active Brake Assist. The system warns of collisions with moving pedestrians and cyclists as well as stationary and moving objects. In the event of a serious risk of collision, the driver is alerted by a visual and acoustic warning and partial braking is initiated automatically.

Sideguard Assist 2 is a safety assistance system that supports the driver in critical situations when turning right or turning left when visibility is possibly restricted. The system is designed to help detect moving obstacles within the system limits, and warns the driver so as to avoid critical situations or reduce the consequences of accidents when turning off or changing lanes.

A bus that's safe all round.

Mercedes-Benz has invested a lot in passive safety in the eCitaro. For example, the frame used is an annular frame. What's more, the side walls are reinforced for additional protection in the event of a side impact. Of course, the body meets the high stability requirements of the UN ECE R29.3 guideline in order to provide comprehensive protection for the driver and occupants even in the event of the bus rolling over or tipping over. Climb aboard and feel safe all round!

The range was determined internally under specific conditions, including equipment with a maximum battery capacity, battery in delivery condition, typical city bus operation, and moderate weather scenario, and may differ, for example, from the values determined under Regulation (EU) 2017/2400. The actual range depends on the individual use of the vehicle, the vehicle configuration and other external factors. Therefore, the actual range may be below or above the specified value.

Legal notice on active safety assistance systems: Emergency braking systems and other safety assistance systems can support the driver and mitigate the severity of accidents or prevent accidents in critical driving situations under optimal conditions, within the system limits. However, irrespective of this, the driver has a duty to adapt his driving behaviour and in particular his speed to the traffic and weather conditions and to be attentive at all times. This applies in particular to special situations such as icy or wet roads, rain, crosswind, poor visibility, snowfall, fog, etc. Consequently, the driver, as the driver of the vehicle, has the responsibility for the entire driving situation at all times and must not rely exclusively on the safety assistance systems.

Assistance systems can only support drivers. The driver is always fully responsible for driving the vehicle safely.

Safety

Safe high-voltage technology.

Crash-proof battery modules, fire-resistant batteries, protected high-voltage cables – the eCitaro's high-voltage technology offers you comprehensive safety both when charging and during operation and service. The Mercedes-Benz test procedure, in which the cell, cell module, battery pack and battery group are extensively tested and certified, is a stress test you can rely on. And so that your workshop staff can also work without any fear of contact, there's also the high-voltage qualification programme from OMNIplus.

Sideguard Assist 2 & Frontguard Assist

Traffic Sign Assist (TSA)

The system is designed to provide dedicated and appropriate feedback if the permitted speed is exceeded. Thanks to the state-of-the-art instrument cluster, the driver receives both visual and audible signals that immediately draw attention to the speed.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM)

The wireless tyre pressure monitoring with indication in the multifunctional display is an electronic safety system that permanently monitors the air pressure of all tyres. Tyre pressure losses are displayed within the system limits.

The right tyre pressure contributes to driving safety and significantly reduced fuel consumption. Even a tyre pressure set 0.5 bar too low can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%. The wheel electronics are positioned on the valve on the inside of the rim. The sensors record the data relevant to the tyre pressure and transmit it to the display instrument.

360° camera

The 360° camera system consists of four cameras that capture the immediate vehicle environment and generate an indirect all-round view. The associated 10" screen is located on the A-pillar above the cockpit. This system allows pedestrians, cyclists and obstacles to be seen even in areas that are otherwise not visible to the driver. In this way, the system increases road safety, as collision hazards can be detected and, at best, prevented.

270° camera

The 270° camera system consists of three cameras that capture the rear part of the vehicle and create an indirect view. This is displayed on a 10" screen, which can be located in different positions in the cockpit depending on the vehicle. Thanks to this system, pedestrians, cyclists and obstacles can also be seen in areas that are difficult for the driver to see. This way the system increases road safety as a possible collision can be detected and, at best, prevented.
